"The firm was founded in 1922 and has just gone through a generational change; Paul Fuchs now manages the vineyards and winemaking. He is the 4th generation of the domaine and has taken over from his parents, Henry and Cathy. Paul Fuchs has been trained, inter alia, in New Zaland. Since the mid 00s, he has consequently converted the activities toward organic farming and developed a style in favour of dry and complex wines.
His land covers 10 hectares with 30% of riesling; 20% each of Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Gris, along with all other Alsace grapes. Paul Fuchs is particularly proud of his Pinot Noir, which grows on Grand Cru Kirchberg. This sunny, dry and well-drained terroir allows to Pinot Noir to mature properly and gives an aromatic and spicy wine bursting with dark fruit and ripe tannins. It is called Rouge comme Renard with allusion to both the French and the German words for fox : Renard and Fuchs, respectively.
Paul Fuchs strives to minimize the sugar content of his wines. In Theory this can lead to either some green notes if harvestingis done too early, or to excessively high high alcohol levels, if fermentation is driven too far. But Paul skillfully manages to balance everything out nicely.
Fuchs have a clear segmentation of the wines where the intermediate range consists of Riesling Equinoxe, Pinot Gris Tzigane ans Gewurztraminer l'Ambroisie. All these are of high quality and very good value.
